REAL GUY -- REAL EXPERIENCES -- REAL INFORMATION

Learning to Build a Website

I was on a mission to learn how to build a website.  Yes, I had visited what must have been thousands of them by the time I started my quest.  Yet, I really had no idea how they were “made.”  Moreover, I thought it probably required special knowledge and experience I might never be able to acquire.

So off I went.

I was on a mission to learn how to build a website.  Yes, I had visited what must have been thousands of them by the time I started my quest.  Yet, I really had no idea how they were “made.”  Moreover, I thought it probably required special knowledge and experience I might never be able to acquire.

I actually began my virtual education by turning to a literary source.  A gentleman who had taught himself to build a website had produced a book describing the process in a series of chapters and steps.  My logic was that if I just followed his method, I would end up with the website I sought.

And so I did.

I began reading the book, following the steps, and getting my project underway.  But somewhere, and fairly early in the process, I felt I was in a place where my page construction was not matching the expected level of achievement given where I was in the book.  Apparently, it was going to take more than four degrees of “college knowledge” to put this thing together.  Apparently, it was going to take YouTube.

And so it did.

I became a YouTube fiend.  I feel like I became personally responsible for increasing everyone’s click-through rates and watch time, although I have no proof of these analytics.  I finally settled on one gentleman’s instructional video, and I followed it to the frame.

As I made my way through the instructive demonstration, I found out what pieces were involved and the decisions I needed to make.  I chose a hosting site, a domain name, a content management system, colors, logo design, site format, header and footer format, contact email, cookies, privacy policy, terms & conditions, etc.  Eventually, I had a site dedicated to chess, which I tagged “Monday Morning Grandmaster.”

What became of my original purpose – to create a site to display my coins?  The hours spent scouring YouTube revealed to me the existence of other creative avenues, engendering ideas that were varied, vast, and multidirectional.  Indeed, the original goal of having a coin display site soon became but one of many goals.  The pursuit of these goals has led me to the present writing, and I will expound on them as I continue to wax poetic here.

See you in the next post.
